bank deposit

gloried in the river’s hand

yet paled in ours away

better left as treasured shallows

than stones of fonder memories

withdrawn from river banks

and from our pockets stray

Calm day without a ripple
peace is so compelling
reflecting life as we would wish it
and so the setting spills the surface
barring all but beauty
speaking well within the depths of golden cove

from a distant glance
rocks create a path for minds to walk and jump
across this quiet cove
in playful childhood memory

but on approach those rocks make boulder moves
and scale is seen more clearly
not in waters tale nor in these giant trees
but on these bouldered banks
as mule deer break their truancy
with twitching ears
and tail
and subtle moves revealed

but hold them still these subtle moves
and ghostly blend will be
to leave them still
unseen
a story missed with thoughtless glance
but lost to reverie and beauty

Imagined view toward earthly chard's

rolled and softened by the river’s run

but now the waters slowed to trickling pools

awaiting storms of seasons come
to broaden banks beyond this stony ground

a tree above has cast this shadow seen

it’s leaves now boil in a moment’s breeze

and through these running shadows - animation -
from painter’s jest of trash I left

for the glint of light from cellophane

as it ticks and clicks across this scene

a subtle proof of artist’s head

and hands that shaped this stoic bed

Black stone and granite intersect
on stable ground

grays and muted hues dot this spotted menagerie
here transient pieces come and go

deposits from on high
carried by the wind or merely fall
from branches neigh

rest with others brought and tumbled
in high-water season

none will leave their mark on this
black and white foundation

but balance now
a scene as seen
of fleeting memory

shadows cast the story

a memoir to a glance

a studied chance

along the path that few have taken

a thousand words explain this simple scene

with feeling not forsaken

yet readers have a picture each their own

so I write in paint a memory honed

from slow and careful study

The sun strays through trees above

as it’s caught on leaves

to focus there in dappled spots

but in the late of afternoon shade

these leavings shine so bright

refracting waves

have bent them now to ribbons

and with them deftly wrap this gift of light

and hide it here

beneath the lily pads

within a garden pond
